Hemorrhoids

This is not a substitute for direct care by YOUR doctor. Confirm with your doctor before following any of the listed recommendations.

What is a hemorrhoid?

Hemorrhoids are blood vessels. Everyone has them. The problem is when they become enlarged. Internal Hemorrhoids are those a little higher up within the anus. They have minimal sensation. External Hemorrhoids are on the outside edge of the anus. They have full sensation and can be VERY painful when there is a problem.

What causes problems?

In most patients, the cause of hemorrhoid problems is pressure. This can be pressure from constipation, from pregnancy, from straining on the toilet, from diarrhea, and many other things.

What to do?

FIBER! The first step to treating hemorrhoids is adding fiber to your diet, drinking plenty of water, limiting your time on the toilet, keeping the area as clean as possible (without causing skin irritation), and Sitz baths.

When to see the doctor?

You should see a doctor if: you have blood (!!!) in your stool, you have severe pain, you have fevers or chills, things are not getting better, or you simply have concerns or questions.
